Albums you need to know about

_Daft Punk/Alive

From Daft Punk’s first single release in 1993, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter were hailed as a new breed of electronic music innovators. Following their seminal debut in 1997 (Homework), the band went on to release two more studio albums (Discovery-2001, Human After All-2005) and two live albums (Alive 1997, Alive 2007), winning them both critical and popular acclaim throughout the world. Daft Punk are known as much for their music and technical innovation as their groundbreaking and elaborate visual universe, which centers around their irrepressible and mysterious Robot personas. In 2006, their directorial art house film debut, “Daft Punk’s Electroma,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and in 2007 they toured internationally with a jaw-dropping live show that was an awe-inspiring combination of their musical and visual prowess. Their collaboration with Kanye West on his #1 hit single “Stronger” was hailed as “The Song of the Year” by SPIN Magazine (January 2008 issue), which also saw Daft sharing the cover with Kanye, having been awarded “Tour of the Year” by the magazine. Daft Punk performed with West on the Grammy Awards in 2008, marking the mercurial duo’s first and only television appearance anywhere in the world. “TRON: Legacy” will mark Daft Punk’s first film score.

_De La Soul/3 Feet High and Rising

De La Soul is an innovative hip-hop group from New York who are best known for introducing positivity into the genre, when it was dominated by intensity and machismo. Since their famous debut, they have released a handful of excellent records, establishing them as one of hip-hop's best ever groups. That debut, 1989's 3 Feet High And Rising is considered a classic and one of the greatest debuts in hip-hop history. Using jazz, funk and disco samples to create an upbeat party vibe, it ushered in a new cheerfulness to hip-hop that served as a contrast to the political antagonism of Public Enemy and the gangsta posturing of N.W.A.. But they were labelled as "hippies" by some, due to their positivity and flowery artwork. On follow-up album De La Soul is Dead, they took an edgier approach, while retaining their humour and persisting in criticising gangsta attitudes. It wasn't received well at the time, but is now regarded as a classic of the genre. Third album Buhloone Mindstate cemented their reputation and saw increased maturity, and is considered by some diehard fans to be their best album. Stakes Is High was their first album without founding producer Prince Paul, and it received mixed reviews. The group then took a short break before returning with a duo of albums pre-titled "Art Official Intelligence" (AOI for short). AOI: Mosaic Thump was a disappointing 2000 comeback, as it seemed that the positive vibes that had made their debut so great had now completely disappeared. But AOI: Bionix the following year saw a return to form with arguably their best album since ...Is Dead. In 2004 De La Soul released their seventh studio album, The Grind Date, without the anticipated AOI prefix. It received warm reviews, with most fans considering it almost as good as AOI: Bionix.

_Sonic Youth/Sonic Youth LP

Sonic Youth began way back in 1980 in the downtown disaster unit of NYC. First three records (Sonic Youth, Confusion is Sex, Kill Yr Idols) began in 1981 on the Neutral label started by Glenn Branca. They then signed to Gerard Cosloy’s Homestead imprint releasing Bad Moon Rising and the Flower/Halloween 12” to universal intrigue and acclaim. They switched labels to release records (Sister, Evol) on SST, the Southern California label overseen by Greg Ginn of Black Flag, while Mr. Cosloy went on to join Matador Records with Chris Lombardi. Concurrently they established a relationship with Paul Smith and Blast First Records in the UK co-releasing the Homestead and SST titles and culminating with the massive end of the decade double LP Daydream Nation, since added to the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress. The band signed to DGC/Geffen in 1990 and began an ascendant affair there releasing Goo and Dirty to much heated excitement until the label became a scattered asylum. They continued to release strange, out-of –step recordings with Geffen throughout the 90s and early 2000s. Young wizard Jim O’Rourke came on board with the band as a multi-instrumentalist/producer collaborating on two of their most progressive LPS to date, Murray Street and Sonic Nurse, as well as the ongoing series of experimental LPs on the bands own SYR imprint. After Jim’s departure, and after releasing Rather Ripped, their final statement on Geffen (and which ranked third in Rolling Stone's Top 50 Albums of 2006) the band recruited their pal from compatriot 90s band Pavement, Mark Ibold, to play bass. After a solid bout of touring Mark joined the band in the recording of The Eternal. The cover art is a painting by the late, great American folk artist John Fahey. This is where we live forever. Sweet dreams.
